Tethys and Aquaveo Champion Innovative Geoscience Applications
At the intersection of water resources, civil engineering, and open-source development, the collaboration between Tethys and Tethys applications continues to push boundaries. Aquaveo has been a long supporter of Tethys and the Tethys Platform. Together, we’re making it easier for engineers and scientists to build web-based applications that turn complex environmental data into practical tools.
The Tethys Platform is a free and open-source web application framework built with civil and environmental engineers in mind. Developed in Python and supported by a strong set of development tools, it removes the steep learning curve of traditional web development. Instead of spending time setting up databases and building APIs from scratch, users can focus on what matters—solving real-world environmental problems.
Background
Originally conceived by Nathan Swain, a partner at Aquaveo, Tethys revolves around the idea of providing open-source web applications for the geoscience community. As it evolved, it began to include applications such as CityWater, AGWA, Hydroviewer, and more. Over time, a growing number of organizations found Tethys to be the solution to their problems.
In 2024, Aquaveo partnered with GEOGLOWS, Lynker, and Brigham Young University to form the Tethys Geoscience Foundation, a non-profit organization to support Tethys. Its mission is simple: provide open-source tools that can help people build better environmental apps. Whether you’re a seasoned developer or just starting out, Tethys gives you the flexibility to work with models and datasets through user-friendly, web-based interfaces.
The Role of Aquaveo
Aquaveo has been involved with the Tethys Geoscience Foundation from the start. Here’s how we help:
-
Training and Support: Need help learning how to work with Tethys? We provide training to help you develop and maintain your own applications.
-
Custom Application Development: We work directly with clients to build apps tailored to their specific needs. This includes apps for water quality monitoring, flood modeling, data visualization and more.
-
Portal Management and Hosting: Don’t want to deal with deployment and maintenance? We’ve got you covered with secure hosting and management of your Tethys Portals.
Open-Source Collaboration That Works
The partnership between Aquaveo and the Tethys Geoscience Foundation shows what’s possible when open-sourced tools are paired with real-world engineering needs. With a strong community and an eye toward the future, we’re building software that helps tackle today’s environmental challenge.
Tethys Summit 2025
Want to get involved or see what applications others are building? The Tethys Summit 2025 is happening July 14–15 in Tampa, Florida. It’s a great opportunity to connect with developers, researchers, and engineers who are using the platform in innovative ways. To encourage community engagement, Tethys Geoscience Foundation is providing a travel grant program to reimburse the cost of travel, hotel, meals, and registration for the summit
