2DHM-A Course Description

This course is a supplementary course to the 2D Hydraulic Modeling for Transportation Hydraulics (2DHM) course. Attendees will gain familiarity with the different file formats, understand their specific uses, and learn how to interpret the various diagnostic messages provided by SRH-2D through the Surface-water Modeling System (SMS). Developed by Aquaveo, SMS functions as a graphical pre- and post-processor for numerous 2D modeling engines. Additionally, participants will discover how to effectively employ monitor lines within SRH-2D and leverage their output to verify model stability and steady-state convergence.

Course Format

This course is offered within a standard work week, consisting of three days of virtual sessions of 3 hours each. These sessions can be scheduled on consecutive days or with a break in between; the suggested schedule is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Alternative timing for the sessions can be scheduled upon request. However, the course is not designed to be conducted over an extended period.

Participants will also be expected to complete two independent exercises outside of the live online sessions—one after Session 1 and before Session 2, and another after Session 2 and before Session 3. Each independent exercise is expected to take approximately 1 hour, but will depend on individual experience.

Cost

The cost of the 3-day course is $400 (USD) per attendee.

Registration includes the following:

  • Instruction and hands-on use of the Surface-water Modeling System (SMS)
  • Links to download the SMS software, data files for the hands-on exercises, and color PDFs of the two training manuals

  • A 30-day trial license of the full Surface-water Modeling System

Training Attendee Cancellation Policy

* Discounts available for groups of 3 or more as well as State DOT's.  Please email training@aquaveo.com for more details.

Instructors

Dr. Alan Zundel - Architect and director of the SMS interface development. Author of SMS reference manual and tutorials. Ph.D., Brigham Young University, 1994. President, Aquaveo, LLC. Dr. Zundel has taught university level courses and several short courses in the area of hydraulic analysis and finite element modeling.

Tom Moreland, CFM - Engineering consultant at Aquaveo and past developer of SMS; Tom has over 10 years of experience working with SMS and teaching SMS courses at locations throughout the world.

Todd Wood, PE - Mr. Wood is a water resources engineer at Aquaveo. Mr. Wood received his Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Brigham Young University. He has conducted professional training courses in the use of AHGW, GMS, SMS and WMS throughout the United States and worldwide. He works on surface-water, groundwater, coastal, and hydrologic modeling projects at Aquaveo. Todd is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Utah.

Scott Hogan, PE - Mr. Hogan is the Principal Engineer and founder of Transportation Hydraulics Solutions, LLC (THS). He provides custom training, technical support and project support for transportation hydraulic engineering.  He specializes in 2D hydraulic modeling, bridge scour analysis, and scour countermeasure design. Prior to THS, he worked as a hydraulic engineer for the Federal Highway Administration for 19 years and Ayres Associates for 10 years.

Intended Audience

The target audience for this course is engineers who have responsibility for, or desire to work with, the hydraulic analysis and design of highway river crossings.  Course participants should have knowledge of the fundamentals of open channel flow hydraulics.

PDHs

Each participant who successfully completes the course will earn 8 PDHs. To earn PDHs, participants will be required to attend and participate in each session, complete the modeling exercises, complete an ungraded assessment at the end of the course, and complete the feedback form at the end of the course.  Certificates of completion that include PDHs will be provided to attendees once these requirements are met.

Other Details

Each participant is required to provide their own computer that meets the SMS system requirements listed at the bottom of this page. Additional information will be provided in a pre-course email with links to download the SMS software, training manuals, exercise data files, as well as a temporary SMS license code to enable the software during the training.

*Note: This course is subject to a minimum enrollment requirement of 10 participants. If the minimum number of registered participants is not met, the course may be cancelled or rescheduled. The maximum number of participants in the course will be 30.
