Job Summary

Aquaveo is hiring a full-time entry level GIS Analyst and Programmer to work alongside existing NOAA-Office of Water Prediction (OWP) staff at the National Water Center (NWC) on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa. Use cutting edge GIS technology and programming to support the effort to develop the next-generation in streamflow and flood forecasting capabilities for NOAA OWP.

Responsibilities

The National Water Center is a dynamic work environment with opportunities to work on a variety of projects. Responsibilities are often assigned based on skill and capability. Responsibilities for this position may include:

  • Work with scientists to develop new automated GIS workflows (i.e. programming) and National Water Model guidance products.
  • Maintain and expand processing pipeline software developed and used in-house.
  • Develop new RESTful endpoints for accessing National water Model and other OWP datasets.
  • Find and fix bugs and implement user feedback.
  • Improve real-time flood forecast inundation mapping techniques and supporting GIS data sets.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and partners of OWP to identify gaps and weaknesses in existing products and methods.
  • Support table-top exercises for evaluating flood mapping services provided to stakeholders.
  • Adapt and improve GIS workflows for Amazon Web Services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors of Science
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident
  • Experience with ESRI GIS applications and tools such as ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Process-automation programming using Python, R, or similar scripting language
  • Computer Science or equivalent education (e.g. Hydro-informatics; no degree required)
  • Experience with Git and versioning workflows
  • Training or background in hydrologic and geospatial science a plus
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and maintain good relationships
  • Detailed knowledge of the National Water Model operations and capabilities (http://water.noaa.gov), inundation mapping, and terrain modeling is a bonus, but not required.
